“The New Gawadar Aiport symbolizes a new era in Pakistan’s aviation, ready to be the biggest and most advanced gateway, driving connectivity and economic progress.”

The New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA) is on the edge of becoming Pakistan’s largest airport following the successful completion of its comprehensive testing and commissioning phase. This critical milestone brings the airport closer to fully operational status, positioning it as a significant hub in the nation’s aviation landscape and a key component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Comprehensive Testing and Commissioning

The testing and commissioning phase, which spanned over three months beginning on April 15, was meticulously planned and executed to ensure that every aspect of the airport’s infrastructure met the highest efficiency, safety, and regulatory compliance standards. This process involved a rigorous examination of all critical systems, including the runway, taxiway, apron, electrical and telecommunications systems, security features, water supply, and grid station. Each element was inspected, checked, and tested to confirm that it could function optimally under various conditions.

An official from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of Pakistan provided insights into the process, stating, “Testing and commissioning encompass a series of engineering techniques and procedures designed to check, inspect, and test every operational component of a project. This ensures that all elements, including construction, processing, and installation, function according to their designated capacity, usage, and requirements.

Strategic Importance of NGIA

The NGIA is more than just an infrastructure project; it is a symbol of Pakistan’s growing partnership with China under the CPEC initiative. The airport, which spans over 4,300 acres and is located 26 kilometres northeast of Gwadar city on the Arabian Sea coast, is designed to handle a wide range of aircraft, from narrow-body planes like the ATR 72 and Boeing B-737 to wide-body aircraft such as the Airbus A-380 and Boeing B-747. This capability will enable the airport to support both domestic and international flights, significantly enhancing Pakistan’s connectivity with the world.

In July of the previous year, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif inaugurated the airbase infrastructure of the NGIA, which includes 32 essential components such as civil, technical, electrical, and communication facilities. This inauguration marked a significant step forward in the airport’s development, showcasing the progress made in realizing this ambitious project.

Future Developments: Cargo Complex and Open Sky Policy

Looking ahead, one of the most anticipated developments for the NGIA is the construction of a cargo complex. This facility will be crucial in handling a variety of cargo types, further cementing the airport’s role as a vital logistics hub in the region. The airport is also set to become the second in Pakistan to operate under an open sky policy, allowing for greater flexibility in air traffic management and making it an attractive destination for airlines worldwide.

The NGIA project, with a budget of Rs. 60.208 billion, is a flagship initiative under CPEC, reflecting the deepening economic ties between Pakistan and China. The successful completion of the testing and commissioning phase is a testament to the dedication and expertise of all involved, and it marks a significant milestone in the airport’s journey to becoming Pakistan’s largest and most advanced aviation facility.

A New Era in Pakistani Aviation

The New Gwadar International Airport is set to play a transformative role in Pakistan’s aviation sector. As the largest airport in the country, it will not only enhance connectivity but also contribute to the economic growth and development of the region. The completion of the testing and commissioning phase is a major achievement, bringing the project one step closer to its goal of becoming a key player in the global aviation industry. With its strategic location and state-of-the-art facilities, the NGIA is poised to usher in a new era for Pakistani aviation.
