Lahore & Karachi Stadiums on Track for Champions Trophy, PCB Confirms
PCB Chairman Reassures: “Our main target is that these stadiums are ready before the Champions Trophy” |
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) remains optimistic about completing renovations at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and the National Stadium in Karachi in time for the ICC Champions Trophy next year. However, ongoing construction could disrupt several domestic matches this season, including the upcoming Test series against England in Karachi.
Renovation Impact on Domestic Matches
The PCB has already moved the second Test against Bangladesh, originally scheduled for Karachi, to Rawalpindi. Speaking to reporters, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi acknowledged that some matches during the season may need to be relocated. “Matches(during the season) may move back and forth, but the main target is that these stadiums are ready before the Champions Trophy,” Naqvi emphasized.

Uncertainty Surrounds England’s Karachi Test
England is set to play their second of three Tests in Karachi from October 15th to 19th. However, with ongoing renovations, the PCB has not confirmed Karachi as the venue.
“At this stage, we will not like to speculate on the hosting of the second Test in Karachi from 15-19 October and will continue to work closely with the architects and construction experts on the safe and secure hosting of the match, while keeping the England and Wales Cricket Board updated,” the PCB stated.
Stadium Upgrades a Priority
Naqvi highlighted the pressing need for stadium renovations, noting that none of Pakistan’s stadiums currently meet international standards.
“None of our stadiums could qualify internationally. Not the seats, not bathrooms, and a view that looks like you are watching from 500 meters away,” he said. The PCB is committed to upgrading these facilities to meet global standards, with a focus on ensuring they are ready for the Champions Trophy.
Challenges Ahead
Despite the PCB’s confidence, past venue changes and delays have raised concerns about their ability to host international events smoothly. The board is working closely with architects and construction experts to ensure the stadiums are ready while also managing the logistical challenges posed by ongoing renovations.
Looking Forward
The PCB has set a five-month timeline for completing partial renovations, with the aim of meeting the Champions Trophy deadline. While the focus remains on long-term upgrades, the board must navigate immediate challenges to ensure the successful hosting of upcoming matches and the prestigious ICC event.
