Oxford Partners with Malala Fund to Revolutionize Teacher’s Training in Pakistan

In a groundbreaking step for education in Pakistan, the University of Oxford has signed an agreement with the Malala Fund to support the NGO ‘Durbeen’ in developing a teacher-educator training program. Shehzad Roy, a well-known education advocate and rockstar, announced the collaboration, highlighting it as the first of its kind in South Asia.

Building a Skilled Teaching Workforce

During an interview at Oxford University, Roy expressed gratitude to Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai for her efforts in establishing the partnership. This initiative, aimed at overhauling teacher training across Pakistan, is designed to create skilled teacher-educators who can deliver high-quality B.Ed. programs in Pakistan’s teacher training institutions.

The Oxford-supported M.S. program will offer specializations in five key areas: Language, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, and Educational Psychology. Each track will prepare educators to lead corresponding B.Ed. courses in teacher education institutions throughout the country.

Key Leaders and Global Insights

The project brings together influential leaders from both Pakistan and Oxford University. Alongside the Malala Fund, contributors include Salma A Alam, CEO of Durbeen, and Drs. Ann Childs, Aliya Khalid, and Ian Thompson of Oxford. Dr. Thompson, after visiting Pakistan, noted that meeting Pakistani teacher trainers helped shape the program specifically for the country’s needs. “This collaboration is intended to empower trainers, ensuring a positive impact on educational standards for generations,” he said.

A First for Pakistan and a Future for Education

Salma Alam, CEO of Durbeen, called this initiative a “major milestone” as it introduces a separate category for teacher-educators in Pakistan. “Quality begins at the top,” she emphasized, explaining that without well-prepared teacher-educators, high teaching standards in schools cannot be achieved. Through this program, Pakistan aims to build an innovative education system where government-trained educators create meaningful change in classrooms across the nation.
