Terrorist Attack Near Karachi Airport Leaves Two Chinese Nationals Dead
Karachi, Pakistan: Two Chinese nationals lost their lives in a tragic explosion near Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport on Sunday night, an attack that was later claimed by the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA). The Chinese Embassy in Pakistan confirmed the incident, which also left at least 10 people injured, including police officers. The explosion was described as a “terrorist attack” by authorities, and the militant group BLA claimed responsibility, stating they targeted Chinese nationals, including engineers, using a vehicle-borne explosive device.
Details of the Attack
The local news outlet, Geo News, reported that the blast was caused by an explosive-laden vehicle. The Chinese Embassy condemned the attack in a strongly worded statement, calling for a thorough investigation and demanding stronger measures to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens working in Pakistan.
“The Chinese Embassy and Consulates General in Pakistan strongly condemn this terrorist attack (and) express deep condolences to the innocent victims of both countries,” the embassy’s statement read.
Police Investigation
Deputy Inspector General East, Azfar Mahesar, informed the media that the initial investigation pointed to the involvement of an oil tanker in the explosion. He added, “We are investigating the cause and circumstances of the blast, which will take some time.” He did not rule out terrorism as a possible cause, stating that further investigations were underway. Mahesar also confirmed that police officers were among the injured.
Rahat Hussain from the Civil Aviation Department noted that the explosion’s intensity was strong enough to shake airport buildings.
Explosion Targeted Foreign Nationals
Provincial Home Minister Zia Ul Hassan confirmed that the explosion appeared to target foreign nationals, stating, “Reports are suggesting that it was an IED explosion,” while assuring that a full-scale investigation was launched.
Police surgeon Summaiya Syed reported that four injured individuals were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical College (JPMC), with one person in critical condition. The blast occurred near Karachi’s airport, producing thick clouds of smoke in the area, according to The Express Tribune.
Previous Attacks on Chinese Nationals
This attack is the latest in a string of violent incidents targeting Chinese nationals in Pakistan. In March, five Chinese citizens and their Pakistani driver were killed when a suicide bomber drove into their convoy in northwest Pakistan. The BLA has frequently targeted Chinese workers involved in infrastructure projects linked to Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Thousands of Chinese workers are currently in Pakistan, working on these multibillion-dollar projects, which have become frequent targets of separatist and militant groups.
Rising Violence in Balochistan
Balochistan has seen a surge in violent attacks in recent months. In August alone, coordinated attacks in the province claimed over 70 lives. The BLA continues to target Chinese workers, viewing the BRI projects as a threat to their autonomy. This attack, one of many, highlights the ongoing security concerns for foreign nationals working in Pakistan.
